Obituary for Edward "Ted" J. MacDonald

Edward “Ted”
(July 18, 1928 – November 22, 2020)

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Edward (Ted) MacDonald at the age of 92 at the Almonte Hospital on the 22 Nov 2020. Loving son of William MacDonald and Lilian Lashbrook. Predeceased by brothers Jack (Vivien), Howard (Betty) and Glen (Gladys). Survived by his loving wife Linda, sister Grace Champagne and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ted was a lifelong employee and manager of “Top Banana” Fruit and Vegetable Stores owned by the Weltman family of Ottawa. He worked for them from their early beginnings in the Byward Market, Bank Street and Ted’s favourite - the Merivale Road store. The store was his life, he reveled in the hustle and bustle of the fruit and vegetable business and loved to share his knowledge with his customers. He could tell you how to prepare anything, he was a great cook! Ted touched many lives over the years. He mentored many young men and women. He could be rough and gruff, but he had everyone’s best interest at heart. Working at “Top Banana” was like being part of the family.

Ted’s family would like to thank the staff of the Almonte Hospital for their compassionate care. Donations can be made to the Almonte Hospital.

Private Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Friday, November 27, 2020 at C. R. Gamble Funeral Home & Chapel. The service will be recorded and posted on the Youtube channel of St Paul’s Anglican Church in Almonte.

Deborah Konecny

I just wanted to express my condolences to the MacDonald family. Anybody that worked at Top Banana knew Ted. Top Banana was one of my best part-time jobs I ever had, he made sure the produce was on the floor and the trucks were rolling. That store was one of the best to work for not to mention that old punch clock on the wall and the cheque were ready of payday. I think Ted's management skills taught I lot of young people how to work effectively.
God Bless,
former Employee Deborah

My Beloved Uncle Ted
By Karen Champagne

As I remember my Uncle Ted, the wonderful times I spent with him during my childhood and throughout adulthood. He left me with loving memories that I will hold deeply always. And think of him living in the hearts of those he touched. For nothing loved is ever lost and he was loved so much.

I will miss you, Uncle Ted

Your weary hours and days of pain,
Your troubled nights are past;
And in our aching herts we know

Lynn Smith

My Uncle Ted
By Lynn Smith

My Uncle Ted was a big “Teddy Bear” but those eyebrows sure could cause a scare. He loved it when I’d kiss his head and tell him he was a big marshmallow instead.

His bark was worse than his bite and his actions spoke louder than words. Ted was caring, loving, giving and made sure he gave the last word.

He discovered his love of the “Food channel” and the joy of cooking roast beast. When he hosted family gatherings we would feast, feast, feast.

Hockey was his favourite sport even if the Maple Leaf’s were out of sorts. Friday night hockey was an education and so were the colourful verbal altercations.

Ted was an avid gardener who planted row by row. He shared his passion with me and taught me everything I know. Fruit and vegetables were his game and being the “Top Banana” was his name.

When my dad Moe died you said you lost your best friend, well Ted this is not the end. Follow the light because Moe is waiting for you as you end your fight.

I love you and will miss you my Uncle Ted!!
