Joel and I met in Paris 3 years a go. A short time, yet memories I will always cherish. Joel was a kind adventurous soul that will never be forgotten

To Mr. & Mrs. Forsyth, his family and friends,

I am writing to extend my deepest sympathy for the loss of Joel.

He was such a bright, fun loving spirit. Working at ISED, I met Joel in the Digital Lounge where he worked his technical guru magic. He helped me with my Outlook and was so likeable in his approach. Joel had a way to share his knowledge and make you feel good for visiting and asking. I imagine he helped thousands like me. When Joel found out that I managed Compensation, he and his colleague had lots of questions.

Then he remembered me and would break out into such a big smile and chat in the corridor or in the elevator. During our elevator conversation, he told me he was working in the Minister's Office. I said that's what happens when you are that good!

On Halloween, Joel made my day. I walked in with my Handmaid's Tale costume and he looked up and said "Best costume of the day" with such conviction, that I left beaming.

Although I did not know Joel very well, his zest for life came across so easily - he was the guy I would have loved to sit down with and have a couple beers. I followed Joel's progress through his illness and I honestly was shocked to hear of his passing. Gone too soon, and far too young.

May your memories warm your heart and help fill the loss.

Dear Forsyth family:

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of Joel. I was privileged to get to know Joel shortly after I arrived at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and required the set up of a new computer, cell phone, and all the other modern tools that an office worker needs to do the job. Joel quickly helped me get sorted out and kept me on track thereafter, whenever something with the technology seemed to go off the rails.

It was always a relief to know that Joel was on the case, not just because you knew the problem was going to be resolved, but because of how cheerfully he handled every request. Joel was not just a true IT professional, but also a lovely presence in the office, generous with his time, and always willing to lend a hand. He was a friend to all of us and his passing has been felt by all.

To loosely paraphrase Lincoln, I am aware that nothing I could write would relieve you of the burden of your grief, but perhaps it would come as some small consolation to know the many ways in which Joel helped to brighten the days of his fellow public servants at ISED. He will be missed by all of us.

With my deepest sympathies,

Simon Kennedy

Joel, you were a truly positive and vibrantly alive person, the one I would turn to for all sorts of volcanoes erupting. You are leaving a huge void, but looking back I can only be grateful to have had the opportunity to meet you, work with you and benefit from your immense generosity in helping others. It was cruelly too short, but it was a life well lived, and for that, I salute you. My deepest condolences to Joel family and friends.

Joel was an amazing person, vibrantly nice and always there to help others - the reassuring presence that meant it would all be OK. My condolences.
