Obituary

Kirby, Gerald Patrick Joseph
January 23, 1937 – April 24, 2020

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Gerald on April 24, 2020, at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind his son, Gerald, and his daughter, Patricia. He will be missed by his sisters Nuala, Peigi and Deirdre (Allen). He will also be remembered and missed by his nieces Colleen, Catherine (Aladin), and Shelagh (Michael), and his nephew Chris (Ashley). Gerald was predeceased by his brothers Sean, Brian, Jimmy and Michael.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Gerald immigrated with his family to Canada as a teenager. As a chartered accountant, Gerald spent most of his career teaching at Algonquin College’s School of Business. In retirement, Gerald was heavily involved with the Carleton Place Soccer Club, and spent two terms as a councillor for the town of Carleton Place. He was also active in St. Mary’s Parish and with the Knights of Columbus. He spent many hours on his greatest passions, singing and reading.

Funeral arrangements will be scheduled at a later date.

Hi, Nuala, Peigi and Deirdre,
It has been a long time since those Citizen days, but we wanted to say how sorry we are to hear about Gerald. We remember him as a gentle and urbane man and over the years we have often thought about the Kirby clan and wondered how you were all doing. We have never forgotten how welcoming you were when we arrived in Canada in May 53 years ago and landed jobs at the Citizen. Had the circumstances been different (no Covid!), we would, of course, have been at Gerald's funeral to tell you all this in person.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

As a colleague of Gerald's for his two terms on the Carleton Place Town Council, I remember his passion for always giving his best to the community through attention to detail and determination to ensure that the decisions made were carefully examined from all points of view. His sense of humour often added levity to tense meetings and all of us in the Council Chambers appreciated his talented rendition of the National Anthem. Wendy LeBlanc

We would like to celebrate Geralds life , he was a kind and talented man . We enjoyed our many times together and his family , especially his dear mother and father in Ottawa . The many times were enlivened by his rich irish tenor voice
Our sincere condolences and love to all in the family
May he rest in peace

Dear Kirby Family
I had the pleasure of having Gerry as one of my favourite accounting professors while at Algonquin. We enjoyed many laughs while in his classroom, and enjoyed his unique sense of humour. Gerry was an interesting and fun person to study under. I went on and became a CPA and look back to my times in his class with great fondness. God bless him.
