So sorry to hear of Dian's passing. I remember working with her on CBC Ottawa's Radio Noon decades ago. I was the Resources Commentator and Dian was the Health/Lifestyle Commentator. She always had a smile and handled her work with detail and total professionalism. Dian will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Dian. I have not seen her for a long time but I was a friend of hers at Merivale High School. I think the last time I had seen her was at a high school reunion. And, of course, I saw her many times on the news. When she came on I would always say, “Hey, there’s Dian.” Not original but I always recognized her. When we were in school I remember as one of the kindest, nicest people at school. She always had time to talk and help people out. I’m sure she will be remembered by many other students. I took a look at her pictures that were posted and I can tell that she had a great family and a happy life. That in itself is a great legacy. To all her family I would like to say how sad I am for your loss and I hope you know she will be remembered fondly.

When Dian laughed, the world laughed with her. You would hear her chuckling from the other side of the room, and start laughing yourself, even though you had no idea what was so funny. It was never malicious; Dian was amused or bemused by the march of events around her and chose not to deal with it by getting frustrated or angry. She was approached once by a newspaper reporter contemplating a feature article on the great laughs of Ottawa. Of course, Dian was the first person to come to mind. It was sometimes a curse. Dian bemoaned the times when she let loose with one laugh in the bar and was promptly cut off -- sometimes before she had even finished her first drink. Dian was one of the first friends I made when I moved to Ottawa. She was generous with her advice, her time, and the swimming pool in her back yard. She liked to break her day at the office with a lunch hour walk when she could fit it in, and at her home she introduced me to her garbage day perambulation -- down the alleys in case one of the neighbors was foolish enough to throw away something that deserved a second life. It was there that I first discovered that the dedicated pro at work was an even more dedicated partner in her marriage, and her parental side worried about interfering too much/not enough; setting a good example for her girls/not there enough... wait.... is someone REALY throwing out that lamp? Dian shared the perils of competitive trampolining -- knowledge I have never been able to exploit anywhere since -- and I heard many, many times about the mother guilt when she forgot one daughter inside the house when the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night (fortunately a false alarm). Since those days, we shared less frequent but wonderful visits in Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa, although Dian mourned that the passage of time had reduced the quality of the trash we encountered on our walks. Derek, Erin, Kelly and Morgan -- Dian's family is always welcome in my house if you should happen to be in Calgary. My heart hurts, but my lips are smiling because whenever I think about Dian, I can hear her laugh.
