Jane Gardner

I was deeply saddened to learn from this weekend's paper that Mark has passed away. I worked with him 25 (?) years ago at The Wild Bird Care Center and have wonderful memories of our time together there. His knowledge of and skill with the birds kept me in awe. He was always my go-to person when had a wildlife question of any kind. We shared some beer together some rare pub nights, and tales of his antics and exploits were always very entertaining.
Just to give an example of his deep compassion for even the smallest living thing, I remember him coming to my home, probably 20 years ago, and sitting out on our deck with me. The mosquitoes were out, and rather than squash them when they landed on him, he brushed them off. I asked him what he was doing and he said he didn't want to kill them. I'm sure anyone who knew Mark would not find that surprising.
I got out of touch with Mark, and recently had been thinking more and more about tracking him down. I greatly regret that I missed my chance to see this dear friend again. My deepest sympathy to his family and to all who held him dear.
Take care,
Jane Gardner
